Looking back at 2008 (Part 1 out of 4)

Happy New Year everyone! Today’s the first Monday of the year and well… everyone is probably back to work or to school. I’d like to kick off 2009 by taking a look at the major events and activities that happened in 2008 which I covered through this blog. This is something that I got from GM Tristan who also did a recap of 2008 in his blog. However, I don’t think I have the patience and the willpower to write the entire thing yet since I did a lot of posts for 2008, haha! I’ll divide this into 3-4 posts.

carlowoot

For today, I’ll be talking about the major highlights of the first quarter - January, February, and March of 2008. Read about Ragnarok, Ragnarok Online 2, Cosplay, and Gadgets after the jump!

January 2008
2008 started off with a bang as Philippine Ragnarok Online released a lot of promos and events to liven up the community. We initially released the Episode 11.2: Veins Promotional Video. Other than Veins, I was also really impressed with the Freya server community. They came up with their own PVP Tournament.

LogoRO2

I also explained why we delayed the release of Ragnarok Online 2 in the Philippines. There was still a lot of development needed on the side of Gravity but we’re very excited to see the game finally launch when it is finally completed. FYI - I initially wrote that it will be out in 2008 but that’s obviously not happening since it’s already 2009. Lol. Just stay tuned for further announcements.

For gadgets, we took a look into the Samsung U700, which basically looks kick-ass but eventually breaks down after a couple of months.

In the Cosplay and Anime part of the world, we saw the POGS: Re-Roll Cosplay event. Who can also forget the infamous “Sexy No Jutsu Kakashi” Cosplayer?

February 2008
I bought a bunch of stuff in February! I can still remember opening the boxes of my Macbook and my iPod Nano (Third Generation). The Macbook has been a very good investment since I primarily use it for presentations for my sideline as a New Media consultant. I also can’t live without my iPod Nano because it literally saves my sanity when I drive everyday from Quezon City to Makati to report for work. Level Up Founder Ben Colayco also shares with us his favorite gadgets in an interview with a print publication.

0611macbookbothhg6

There was also a lot of good news for the online gaming industry as a whole. A study was released showing that Gaming is already outgrowing Music and is on the way to challenge Hollywood in terms of revenues and market share.

I also reviewed one of the best Samurai animes I’ve ever watched - Samurai Champloo. I strongly recommend this title to all of you. It is worth the download time or the DVD cost, whatever way you fancy of getting it.

February was also the month where the Adboard ruled against a print ad being used by another gaming company with their claim of being the number one online gaming publisher in the country.

March 2008
March was also a very memorable year for me personally. I bought my first laptop in February, and I bought my own car with my own money in March. After a long debate on the Honda City or the Toyota Vios, I eventually decided on getting the Honda City 2008. I’ve had no regrets ever since. The car has been the best investment I’ve gotten so far since I’ve really used it a lot and it has increased my personal productivity hundredfold (for my sidelines).

I also wrote a short article about business strategies for internet cafes. I used to own one way back in 2004 but we ended up selling it to the landlord due to conflicts with my partners. If there’s one advice I can give you guys is that you shouldn’t go into business with friends unless your prepared on them becoming your enemies, hahaha. The business was really good - but the friendships really turned sour.

gundam00001004ad5

In February, I recommended the best Samurai anime title I’ve ever watched. For March, I recommended the best mech-robot anime title I’ve ever seen - Gundam 00. Note that this anime is now on it’s second season and OMGWTFBBQ it still kicks major ass.

For Ragnarok Online, we uploaded the War of Emperium: Second Edition on Sakaray during this month.

Also, more controversies with the online gaming industry as more people keep claiming that they’re number one.

Okay! That’s it for now. I’ll be writing and publishing part 2 soon. Cheers and Happy New Year everyone!

Ragnarok Server Merge FAQ

November 11, 2008 by admin · Comment

The Philippine Ragnarok Online Team recently posted the official FAQ of the upcoming server merge at the Ragnarok website. I’ve already posted my thoughts and comments about this program and I’m really excited to see what will happen to the community post-merge. It will be very interesting to see what the guilds will do in the light of a new political and game landscape. Who will forge alliances? Who will end up being bitter enemies? Ah the drama. Hahaha! Read the FAQ of the server merge after the jump.

Baldur, Freya and Tyr Alliance FAQ
Date Posted: Nov. 06, 2008
NEW CHAOS SERVER

1. What is the new subscription rate for new Chaos?

To be announced

2. What will happen to our accounts after server merge?
2.a. If your account has a total of 9 characters in all three (3) servers (Baldur, Freya and Tyr) and 300 items stored in Kafra, no need to worry; everything will be copied to the new server.

2.b If your account has more than 9 characters (collectively within three servers) but less than or equal to 18 characters, your account will be split into two (2).

2.c If your account has more than 18 characters, your account will be split into three(3).

2.d If your account has more than 300 items but less than 601 stored inside the Kafra storage within the 3 servers, your account will be split into 2.
Example: Freya kafra 300 items, Baldur Kafra 300 items, Tyr 0 item = 2 split accounts
2.e If your account has more than 600 items stored in kafra in 3 servers, your account will be split into 3.
Example: Freya Kafra 299 items, Baldur Kafra 300 items, Tyr Kafra 100 items = 3 split accounts

3. How to avoid split accounts?
3.a. It is very important that the total number of characters in one (1) account DO NOT exceed 9 characters all across three (3) servers (Baldur, Freya and Tyr) and the total number of items stored in Kafra in three (3) servers (Baldur, Freya and Tyr) do not exceed 300.
*ADVISORY: We advise everyone to please delete ALL unnecessary characters or sell useless items in your account. There should be a total of 9 characters and 300 items stored in your Kafra all across three (3) servers (Baldur, Freya and Tyr) before the server merge.

4. If I have split account how do I recover it?
4.a. If your account is split, the original account (your original username) will contain the primary characters (the order of priority is Baldur->Freya->Tyr). Split account username will get a suffix 01 or 02 with same password as their original account.
Example:
original username: ragnarok
split account username1 : ragnarok01
split account username 2: ragnarok02

5. What if I have the same character names? Can I change it?
5.a. Characters with the same name will have a suffix added on their names. All characters in Baldur will keep their original name.
Ex - CharKoTo_tyr , CharKoTo_fre

5.b. Characters with a suffix added in their name have 11 days (Nov 15 to Nov 26) to change their names through “Change name” button in the char select screen. After 12 days, the Change Name function will be disabled. You can only change names once.

6. What will happen to my game RoK Points?
6.a. You will keep your RoK points if your account is not split.

6.b. In case your account is split, your primary account will retain the Rok points (the order of priority is Baldur->Freya->Tyr).

6.c. All 2nd and 3rds Accounts will NOT get any Rok Points.

7. Meaning if I’m from FREYA or TYR, I will not get any RoK points in my second account if my account splits?
7.a. Technically, yes. That’s why we encourage everyone to make sure that the total number of characters in your account (in all servers) is nine (9) and Kafra items at 300 pcs or less. This will ensure that your account will not get split and that account will have all the Rok points and game time that you have stored up.

8. What about the gametime for my 2nd or 3rd accounts?
All 2nd or 3rd accounts due to split accounts will have 2 hours game time.

9. Do I keep my Kafra pass?
All Kafra pins will be reset. All you have to do is set a new kafra password.

10. If I’m an Acolyte or Priest, do I keep the saved warp points?
All saved warp points will be deleted. This affects all jobs that have the Warp Portal skill (Acolyte, High Acolyte, Priest, High Priest, Monk, Champion, and Super Novice).

11. How about our quests? Should I start all over again?
11.a. All completed quests by your characters will not be affected, so if the quest is not repeatable, you will not be able to do it again after the merge:
Example: Godly Seals, Sign Quest, etc

11.b. Players should still be able to finish incomplete quests after the merge, but please read the advisory below.

* ADVISORY. We advise everyone who has on-going quests to finish it before the server maintenance on Nov 14 to avoid problems.

12. Our guild owns an Agit in Prontera that has an Economy of 75 and Defense of 100.
12.a Economy and safeguard of all agits will reset back to 1.

12.b All Agit ownership will reset (WOE1 and 2). Players will have to take over Agits again once the server is up after the merge.

13. How about our guilds? I heard that there will be a reset guild or something?

13.a. One of the unique features of this merge is the purging of all guilds. Meaning, guilds will be deleted and refreshed. This is to avoid technical issues and guild bugs that happened on the previous mergers.

13.b. Also, all emperiums will be deleted during the maintenance.

13.c. But don’t worry, once the server is up, the biggest race in the history of Philippine Ragnarok online will commence. “The Ragnarok Amazing Guild Race” will automatically start.

Please see here for more details.

14. I’m the top Alchemist in Freya, do I keep my rank?
14.a All ranking systems will be reset: Alchemist Rankings, Blacksmith Rankings, Taekwon Rankings, Aldebaran Race Track Rankings and Izlude Arena Rankings

15. Hey, are inventory items and items in my cart safe?
Yes. You can store your items in your cart. Items in your inventory should also remain intact. We also recommend that you take screenshots of your most valuable items.

16. Will my main account remain linked to my MyLU account? Will my split accounts be automatically linked to my MyLU account?

Your main account will remain linked to your MyLU account. Split accounts will not be automatically linked. It is recommended that you change your password and keep it to yourself before the merge to ensure that you will be the one to link your split accounts to your MyLU account.

17. What will happen if I have 30,000 pcs of elunium in my Kafra storage in Freya and another 10,000 pcs elunium in Baldur’s kafra storage?
All items in excess of 30,000 limit (ex. elunium) will be deleted. So we advise everyone to sell those excess items before the server merge.

18. I need to delete some of my characters to avoid split account, but I forgot the email. What should I do?
File a ticket in our Customer support page https://support.levelupgames.ph/login.aspx and request for email change. The customer support will give TOP priority to all Ragnarok tickets from Nov 7 to Nov 14th.

19. What about the pk setting of Tyr?
The new Chaos server will apply the settings of Baldur and Freya.

20. How come change name option is not applied to Baldur characters?
As of now, change name option is only available to Freya and Tyr characters affected in the split. But don’t worry, a change name feature is already under development and will be implemented once everything is finalized. Just wait for more updates.

The good news is that there will be a cut in the subscription rates for Philippine Ragnarok Online. There’s no word yet on the exact amount so just keep on checking the official website every now and then for more updates.

Thoughts on the Upcoming Server Merge

November 5, 2008 by admin · Comment

Philippine Ragnarok Online will have one more major server merge that will bring together the 3 subscription servers - Baldur, Tyr, and Freya. The new server will be called New Chaos and the date of the merge is slated for November 14, 2008. There are no major details yet posted on the official website like the actual mechanics but it will probably be the same as the previous merges that we’ve done before. There are a lot of pros and cons for this move but I believe that this will be for the better. I have a few reflections and thoughts about the merge that I’d like to share with everyone today with this post. Feel free to leave your comment as well.

BAKBAKAN NA!
To quote Powerspoonz: “Bakbakan na!” That pretty much sums up the pros of the server merge. New alliances will be made and this means a more vibrant political in-game landscape which will result to more action-packed and intense sieges. The balance of power will definitely be shaken up since guilds that are powerful in their own home servers will now have to contend with the best that the other servers have.

It will be interesting to monitor what the top guilds from each server will do given the new scenario. Will they ally with one another? Or will they bash each other’s skulls in? If I know the community right - it will be more of the “bashing”. In my 5 year gaming career one thing has always been constant in gaming communities and that’s the fact that alliances will always crumble and end. I’ve seen this happen countless times across games and servers and I’m sure that whatever alliance happens after the merge it will only be temporary.

TECH PROBLEMS?
The major concern being raised by the community is the possibility of having technical problems ruin the gameplay post-merge. Since we’re putting everyone in one place, people are spectulating that the latency will be terrible. We obviously can’t let this happen because it ruins the purpose of the merge in the first place. I can’t guarantee you guys 100% that there won’t be lag but I can assure you that everyone here will be prioritizing the performance of the servers after the merge.

OLD CHAOS
I can still remember the old Chaos server days. I was one of the first 50 people to log-in Chaos during the Beta Testing way back in 2003. I was there when the botting issue exploded. I was there when the Ragnarok players staged a mini-rally at Glorietta during a Level Up event. I was there when the concurrent users of Ragnarok in Chaos alone hit 16,000. I was there when the hack-delete sprees occured - and sadly I was part of the people who were erased, hehe. I was part of the in-game politics, having led a guild and faction.

Ragnarok Online, though riddled with controveries, has been one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences I’ve had and I will cherish the good and bad memories that I have about it. The server merge will open new doors for everyone and I’m sure that I would be excited about it if I was still an active guild leader in Chaos/Baldur.

Cheers!

Reflection on LIVE 2008: It’s Not a Variety Show

October 21, 2008 by admin · Comment

Wah andami na tao sobrang sikip

I’ve been thinking about what to say about LIVE 2008 as a whole for the past 2 days. It’s actually hard to summarize two days of non-stop action in just one blog post - thus the multitude of posts I’ve been making lately. I usually just do 1-2 a day but I’ve been posting like mad since LIVE ‘08 ended. Anyway, after thinking about LIVE long a hard as well as comparing it to other gaming events that our competitors do, I came upon a conclusion on why I think LIVE is special and why it’s really the biggest online gaming event in the country. Level Up Live 2008 does not put the spotlight on celebrities, movie stars, bands, or sexy girls that have absolutely nothing to do with online gaming. Level Up Live 2008 is NOT a variety show wherein we use the acts to lure in people. We are not about cheap gimmicks. Level Up Live is about one thing and one thing only - it’s a tribute to the gamer. Yes, the sexy cosplayer girls are nice too but ultimately the main draw of LIVE is the tournaments. It’s the culmination of a year’s worth of blood, sweat, and tears for millions of gamers in the country.

I know that our company and our games are not perfect. Yes, we have bugs left and right and we may have the occassional customer support issues. But name a gaming company that doesn’t have that? Even Blizzard has their fair share of problems. My main point here is that when we are able to, we really do try to focus on what you guys need and want. I’ve said this a million times already, if only we were the developers of the game, then we would stop all development until we fix all the bugs. But that isn’t the way this business works. We are game publishers - not developers. It’s not an excuse but I can assure all of you that everyone here is really doing their best to give you guys a good gaming experience.

Level Up LIVE 2008 is a testament to that. It’s the most expensive thing on our annual budget, and it really is the most time-consuming and hardest-thing-for-the-year-to-do for everyone here at Level Up. We don’t actually earn from the event since we don’t charge entrance except for the measly P50 card which you buy beforehand anyway.

At Level Up LIVE, we don’t put up a good show. We just set the stage for the gamers because they are the stars of the movie. They are the ones who are providing the performance of their lives - showing everyone that they are indeed the very best at what they do. In other words, we do Level Up LIVE to make the best gamers out there look good (LOL). If you don’t believe me, then you should have been there during the opening ceremonies. We literally introduced the gamers as if they were WWE superstars! Complete with fireworks, nyahaha. The program of LU LIVE is really built on the psyche of a gamer and that’s what matters the most. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past few events that we’ve done, the crowd cheers louder at matches than they cheer during band performances or even during the Cosplay competition.

I can definitely say that Level Up LIVE 2008 was a phenomenal success. I don’t have the actual headcount yet of the number of people who came but I’m pretty sure that we surpassed last year’s 16,000. Last year we only rented 2 halls and we filled it up. This year we rented the ENTIRE WORLD TRADE CENTER and it was maximum capacity once again.

To all the gamers who went, please accept my heartfelt thanks. To everyone who competed, especially Team Philippines, you guys are all champions. You’ve proven that you are the best in the country and I know that it’s only a matter of time before we finally bring home the gold. To everyone at Level Up that worked hard to make LIVE happen - maraming salamat po!

I’m definitely looking forward to next year’s Level Up Live. I’m sure that everyone here will be scratching their heads trying to figure out ways on how to top this year’s event. Hahaha!

PS - I’ll be posting a few more stuff about LIVE then I will do a wrap-up post summarizing everything.

Team USA Lana Anderson

October 21, 2008 by admin · 1 Comment

You have to give it to our Multimedia team! You guys asked for a feature on Team USA member Lana Anderson and apparently it’s now up on the Level Up website. Lana won the hearts of the crowd at the Ragnarok World Championships with her very warm smile and cheerful personality. She played the camera very well and you could really notice that each time the camera was on her, the crowd would cheer and go crazy. Sometimes she even got more cheers that the Philippine Team, Lol. Well… if you guys don’t know yet, Lana is actually half-Filipina.

be03f_lana-anderson Team USA Lana Anderson

I’ve reposted the entire article at the Level Up Website after the jump.

As it turns out, Lana is half-Filipina! Her mother is a nurse from Manila. The American High Priestess admitted that her Filipino lineage isn’t that evident, and said this is only her second trip to the Philippines. According to Lana, she first visited our shores when she was around five.

Lana was introduced to the world of gaming via Final Fantasy when she was two years old, and it appears that the video game bug has stuck with her ever since. Proof: Pokémon kept her busy when she was 10. Today, Lana owns an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Despite having all the consoles that would turn many local gamers green with envy, Ragnarok Online remains Lana’s favorite game (Isn’t it obvious? She’s a national champion). She also dabbled in Perfect World, but she said her heart belongs to Ragnarok. And her boyfriend, of course. Sorry guys.

The role-playing game genre may be Lana’s favorite, but she also likes playing Halo and Silent Hill. When the latest installment of the Konami-published survival horror game was brought up (Silent Hill Homecoming), Lana’s eyes lit up and she giddily started talking about the series’ trademark scares. While this Ragnarok fan also takes some time to play the adventures of Master Chief, she clearly isn’t that big a fan of first-person shooters. Perhaps it’s the whole concept of using gamepads and analog sticks.

When the High Priestess isn’t kicking butt and taking names, she spends her time drawing and playing cards with her teammates. Like many teens living in the States, Lana is a working student. She is employed at a clothing store, does some modeling, and is studying at the University of California, Los Angeles. By some strange sorcery, this High Priestess still finds the time to do all that and play Ragnarok for at least 30 hours a week.

Lana also made her instant fans all over the world happy when she took the time to field questions from readers of the Level Up! LIVE 2008 Live Blog during a chat session set up by the Level Up! Multimedia team. Scroll down when you click on the Live Blog Replay as the chat was held during the evening of Day 2 of Level Up! LIVE.

Team USA may not have won it all in the Ragnarok World Championships, where Thailand emerged as back-to-back champion, but Lana promises to return for another shot at the title next year.

I’m sure Lana’s Filipino fans are going to be thrilled to hear this news, but it’s hard to say if the tournament would again be held in our shores, or if her squad would again win on the national level since the competition is fierce. Whatever happens, 2008’s Team USA will be remembered fondly.

Lana and her team may not have won the Ragnarok crown, but she has indeed won our hearts.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets an offer from ABS-CBN or some other media company here in the future based on this event alone, hahaha!

Meeting the Gravity CEO

Other than the players that came from all over the world, we also had executives and directors from various gaming companies who went to the Ragnarok World Championships. We had a welcome VIP dinner for them at the Tower Club in Makati City. It was there that I got to know Gravity’s CEO - Yong Seuk Kang and the Ragnarok Creator Myung Jin Lee. What’s funny is that most of the executives at the dinner looked very young - and most of them were really gamers at heart. It’s nice to see that the core teams of the various publishing companies know what their market is all about.

Level Up LIVE & RWC 2008 Cosplay Pictures and Videos

Ragnarok Champion and Gunslinger

Any major Level Up gaming event wouldn’t be complete without Cosplay! Just like the Film Festival entries, this year’s Cosplayers showed a lot of talent and resilience. There was a bit of controversy during the actual competition when one of the Cosplayers fell through the stage but thankfully he’s okay. Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures and videos and I’d like to share them with you today. Instead of posting every single picture though, I compiled them and put them into a picture slideshow video which you can watch after the jump. Get ready to see lots of cute Ragnarok Cosplayers… and a dancing Red MAU!

RWC & LEVEL UP LIVE 2008 COSPLAYERS

Out of all the cosplayers, my favorite was the RF Online RED MAU and the Ragnarok Online Bloody Knight. The problem with the Bloody Knight though was that it was too bulky for the Cosplayer to move while wearing it - unlike the RED MAU which was even able to dance. I’d also like to commend all the other cosplayers who braved the crowd and gave the performance of their lives. You guys really rocked the event!

By the way, I’m currently uploading all the pictures that I could get my hands on into my Flickr Photo Album. Once it’s done, I’ll make a separate post inviting all of you to visit it. Special thanks to GM Atma for giving me pictures from his camera.

Thailand Emerges as RWC 2008 Champion!

October 19, 2008 by admin · Comment

Thailand pulled off an historic win over South Korea making them back-to-back World Champions for 2 years in a row! The defending champions literally bulldozed all of their opponents and showcased how good they were by constantly changing their tactics depending on their opponent. The finals between Thailand and Korea really proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were strong contenders deserving of slots in the finals. I don’t know if I’m calling this right but I think the main difference for the fight was when Thailand used the Gypsy. Apparently Korea had low VIT characters and they almost often found key players stunned which disrupted the over-all flow of their teamwork.

18102008787

Details and results of the other matches after the jump.

At the end of the day, Team Thailand came out victorious over Korea with a 3-2 record. This is the second time in history that Thailand has become world champion and Korea reached 2nd place. It’s really sad to note that the Philippines earlier bowed out to Indonesia in a battle for the third. However, you can’t help but still be proud of Team Philippines given the effort they’ve given to reach where they are now. Remember that they are still the 4th best in the world, and that they are still your back-to-back Ragnarok Philippine Champions.

There is nothing to be ashamed of and I’m sure that it will only be a matter of weeks before these guys get back on their feet and roaring in-game during the weekly sieges and PVP.

Thank you Team Philippines for giving it your all! We will always be proud of what you’ve accomplished. To Thailand, Korea, and Indonesia - Congratulations!

Thailand Upsets Team Philippines (2-0)

October 18, 2008 by admin · Comment

RWC 2007 Champion Thailand defended their title this morning by defeating the host country team of the Philippines. Team PH did their best but they weren’t able to keep up with the aggressive tactics of the defending champions. The first game ended with Thailand having more players while the second match resulted in a wipe-out. However, all is not yet lost. Since Team Philippines lost in the Semi-Finals, they can still win 3rd place later this evening. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed! I’ll be cheering for them later on when they take on their next opponent.

What’s interesting to note here is that Thailand is really proving to everyone that they are a solid force to be reckoned with in the virtual arena. Will we see a repeat of last year’s finals wherein Thailand takes on Korea? We’ll find out later this afternoon when RWC 2008 resumes!

To those, who haven’t been to LIVE yet, be sure to be here before 4PM. Cosplay starts then and we also have the battle for 3rd place for Team Philippines. Don’t also forget that the Filharmoik orchestra will be playing your favorite game themes at around 5PM-6PM.

Cheers!

Powerspoonz Brings the House Down with Barrio!

I was really excited for the opening of Level Up LIVE because I knew that Powerspoonz would be playing the RWC theme song, Barrio, to introduce the teams competing in the Ragnarok World Championships. And OMG - they literally brought the house down! Powerspoonz rocked World Trade Center with so much energy that you could feel the electricity in the air! I won’t be surprised when this band goes big time in a couple of months. They’re really talented and they have the potential to reach international stardom - especially since their exposure in RWC is er… global? Anyway, I took this video of Powerspoonz singing Barrio at the LU LIVE opening ceremonies. Hope you guys enjoy it because I definitely did!

POWERSPOONZ “BARRIO” at LEVEL UP LIVE 2008

I don’t know about you guys but I am definitely a Powerspoonz fan. If these guys ever release an album, I’ll be one of the first to buy it. The reggae-rock sound is just intense!
