Kamikazee to perform at Level Up Live 2009!
I may no longer be an employee of Level Up, but orange blood still runs in my veins. I’ll definitely be attending Level Up Live 2009 at the World Trade Center on November 7-8. Other than seeing all of you guys again, I’m also excited to watch Kamikazee as they make their Level Up comeback performance! Wooooooo! These guys are the bomb. I’ve watched them several times already and they can really get the crowed pumped up in a matter of seconds.

Happy 7th Year Anniversary Level Up!
We celebrated the 7th Year Anniversary of Level Up last Friday and it was a real blast. To spice things up, we had our own Crazy Kart Cosplay competition and we had the various departments prepare their areas with food based on the various festivals of the Philippines. I’ll be posting a more comprehensive photo essay later on but for now let me just share with you the more interesting photos that I was able to take. Okay, now that we’re done with Ozine Fest, let me start plugging our biggest annual online gaming event - Level Up LIVE 2009! We’ve already released official online teasers and banner ads advertising LIVE. These ads leads to our temporary LIVE 2009 Website which has links to the mechanics of all of the tournaments that we’re running for all of our games.

Level Up at Sinulog 2009, Cebu City
Last weekend I had the opportunity to fly to Cebu and experience the famous Sinulog Festival firsthand. We were able to set-up a Gamer’s Hub there together with the help of SMART BRO at the City Grill Restaurant. I think we had around 15-20 PC’s and we ran various activities and tournaments for Freestyle, Crazy Kart, and Grand Chase. Check out some pictures I took after the jump.
Here’s a picture of the lovely and bubbly Grand Chase Community Manager, Cassiel. She’s being mobbed by her Cebuano fans because she’s raffling away Grand Chase T-shirts and other merchandise.
Freestyle Community Manager Misty was also there and she ran various Freestyle on-the-spot activities. Winners took home customized Freestyle Jerseys.
We also had Crazy Kart Community Manager Drift King do several tournaments for Crazy Kart. Here’s a quick snapshot of him with loyal Crazy Karters.
Over-all I had a grand time at Cebu City. I’d like to thank all of your Cebuano gamers for giving Level Up such a warm welcome. Thanks guys! You rock!

Going to Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival
Tomorrow morning I’ll be flying out of Manila to Cebu to join the rest of the team in celebrating the Sinulog Festival. We’re having on-ground tournaments and free play sessions for the following games: Crazy Kart, Grand Chase, and Freestyle! If you’re around the area, then please do swing by so you can party with us and meet the Community Managers of the games. But wait… there’s more! Next week we’ll be flying out again. Looking back at 2008 (Part 1 out of 4)
Happy New Year everyone! Today’s the first Monday of the year and well… everyone is probably back to work or to school. I’d like to kick off 2009 by taking a look at the major events and activities that happened in 2008 which I covered through this blog. This is something that I got from GM Tristan who also did a recap of 2008 in his blog. However, I don’t think I have the patience and the willpower to write the entire thing yet since I did a lot of posts for 2008, haha! I’ll divide this into 3-4 posts.
For today, I’ll be talking about the major highlights of the first quarter - January, February, and March of 2008. Read about Ragnarok, Ragnarok Online 2, Cosplay, and Gadgets after the jump!
January 2008
2008 started off with a bang as Philippine Ragnarok Online released a lot of promos and events to liven up the community. We initially released the Episode 11.2: Veins Promotional Video. Other than Veins, I was also really impressed with the Freya server community. They came up with their own PVP Tournament.
I also explained why we delayed the release of Ragnarok Online 2 in the Philippines. There was still a lot of development needed on the side of Gravity but we’re very excited to see the game finally launch when it is finally completed. FYI - I initially wrote that it will be out in 2008 but that’s obviously not happening since it’s already 2009. Lol. Just stay tuned for further announcements.
For gadgets, we took a look into the Samsung U700, which basically looks kick-ass but eventually breaks down after a couple of months.
In the Cosplay and Anime part of the world, we saw the POGS: Re-Roll Cosplay event. Who can also forget the infamous “Sexy No Jutsu Kakashi” Cosplayer?
February 2008
I bought a bunch of stuff in February! I can still remember opening the boxes of my Macbook and my iPod Nano (Third Generation). The Macbook has been a very good investment since I primarily use it for presentations for my sideline as a New Media consultant. I also can’t live without my iPod Nano because it literally saves my sanity when I drive everyday from Quezon City to Makati to report for work. Level Up Founder Ben Colayco also shares with us his favorite gadgets in an interview with a print publication.
There was also a lot of good news for the online gaming industry as a whole. A study was released showing that Gaming is already outgrowing Music and is on the way to challenge Hollywood in terms of revenues and market share.
I also reviewed one of the best Samurai animes I’ve ever watched - Samurai Champloo. I strongly recommend this title to all of you. It is worth the download time or the DVD cost, whatever way you fancy of getting it.
February was also the month where the Adboard ruled against a print ad being used by another gaming company with their claim of being the number one online gaming publisher in the country.
March 2008
March was also a very memorable year for me personally. I bought my first laptop in February, and I bought my own car with my own money in March. After a long debate on the Honda City or the Toyota Vios, I eventually decided on getting the Honda City 2008. I’ve had no regrets ever since. The car has been the best investment I’ve gotten so far since I’ve really used it a lot and it has increased my personal productivity hundredfold (for my sidelines).
I also wrote a short article about business strategies for internet cafes. I used to own one way back in 2004 but we ended up selling it to the landlord due to conflicts with my partners. If there’s one advice I can give you guys is that you shouldn’t go into business with friends unless your prepared on them becoming your enemies, hahaha. The business was really good - but the friendships really turned sour.
In February, I recommended the best Samurai anime title I’ve ever watched. For March, I recommended the best mech-robot anime title I’ve ever seen - Gundam 00. Note that this anime is now on it’s second season and OMGWTFBBQ it still kicks major ass.
For Ragnarok Online, we uploaded the War of Emperium: Second Edition on Sakaray during this month.
Also, more controversies with the online gaming industry as more people keep claiming that they’re number one.

Level Up Xmas Parteh 2008!
One thing I look forward to every year is the Level Up Christmas Party! It’s one of the wildest and funnest parties that I go to and I’m really psyched up each time the fourth quarter comes in because people start preparing for it. It’s like an internal company Level Up LIVE, and this year definitely topped last year’s party! I wasn’t able to take pictures though so I’m grabbing some pictures from the Facebook accounts of my fellow employees for this post. Hope I don’t post anything incriminating, hahaha! For this year, we had a theme of Super Heroes and Villains, which explains why there are a lot of people in costumes.
To give you guys an idea why I call this Level Up Live for us, it’s because we have the following activities:

Level Up Super Hero/Villains Cosplay Competition

Here’s a picture of the winning team for Group Cosplay. Also in the picture is the winner of the Best Female and Male Cosplayer. The group is cosplaying the Watchmen, while Hazel, one of our talented Creative Artists, is cosplaying Super Girl. Best Male went to Kevin Codamon for being Hell Boy.

In the talent portion, we had a lot of performances and production numbers. Our Finance Team came up with a dazzling broadway musical which left all of us floored. I never new accountants had so much singing prowess. Our ICT Team had a band number with a Karate guy doing kicks and punches on the floor (check picture below).
I had a great time and I can’t way to see what next year’s party will hold for us. I’d like to thank the HR Team for coming up with such an excellent event! You guys definitely rock for putting this together. Onwards to 2009! w00t! ROCK ON LEVEL UP!

Happy Halloween Everyone! Rawr!
Hi guys! I just wanted to greet everyone a happy halloween! Grabe, time really flies by so fast. In just a matter of days we’ll be closing 2008 and we’ll move on to 2009. But the year is not over yet! There’s still so many things that’s in store for the Level Up community for November and December. Let me try to give you guys a preview on what Level Up has in store for the last two months of 2008.
For Ragnarok alone we have the upcoming Server Merge which will bring about the “New Chaos”. The subscription servers of Baldur, Freya, and Tyr will be merged into one entity. I can’t imagine how much this will change the political landscape of the game! New alliances will be born, and I’m sure thousands of Ragnarok players will be coming back to test the game again because of the new community. I’m very excited for this project and this was one of the last things I discussed with a few guild leaders several months ago. I’m happy that it’s finally going to push through.
We also announced new games in Level Up Live 2008 - I’m pretty sure that we’ll be starting testing for those games soon. We have new games for everyone! Hello Kitty, Emil Chronicle, and Rohan Online will attract casual gamers, hardcore gamers, and non-gamers alike. Among the titles though I’m very excited with Hello Kitty because that means we will see more girls come Level Up Live 2009.
Of course the biggest news for November will be the Open Beta of Grand Chase! The newest fighting game of Level Up will definitely be a huge hit in the Philippines. It’s fast paced, action-packed, and very easy to learn. Don’t forget that it’s also Free-to-play. But more than anything, I’m very excited with working with the developers of Grand Chase, KOG Studios. They have a very good reputation on working really fast on bugs, hacks, and cheats.
For Crazy Kart - we’ll be having major patch updates in the coming weeks which will give you guys new maps, karts, and a bunch of items. If you thought that the pinoy jeep, owner, and FX were the only Pinoy things you’ll see in CK, you’re in for a huge surprise!

Mini Job Fair at Level Up LIVE!
Part of our vision here at Level Up is to provide more values to the gaming community and the youth. That’s the main reason why in this year’s Level Up LIVE, we’ve partnered with two famous companies for a mini-job fair! If you’re a fresh graduate or just not employed, then bring your resume with you when you go to the World Trade Center this weekend. You can apply for various positions at PeopleSupport, ePLDT Ventus, and Level Up. This is a chance for you guys to “Level Up” in real life so make the most out of this opportunity to join the working force.

Then you have another reason to head on over to the World Trade Center for Level Up! LIVE 2008, as ePLDT Ventus and PeopleSupport will have booths there for job applicants who wish to explore a career with these leaders in the outsourcing industry.
PeopleSupport Marketing Manager Irene Moran said in an e-mail interview that this is the first time that their company has sponsored an online gaming event.
“We wanted to do this because the majority of the attendees are young adults — just the market we wanted to tap,” she said.
“This event is a branding activity for PeopleSupport. We wanted our company to have a positive impact on the Level Up! participants and introduce them to what we can offer — a company that provides a great compensation package, career advancement in a fun working environment. These are young individuals that we want to tap — most of whom are college students who will be looking for jobs soonest. PeopleSupport’s minimum requirement is at least two years in college and we also have part-time positions,” Moran added.
According to her, PeopleSupport expects to have at least 3, 000 potential applicants at Level Up! LIVE 2008.
So what are some of the qualities they are looking for from applicants?
“PeopleSupport is looking for young and driven employees. Our company is full of young individuals who strive to excel in what they do and who know how to work hard and have fun at the same time. We want to hire employees who are passionate when it comes to their work,” she said.
