Massively: Betawatch: July 24th - July 31st, 2009

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively’s weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we’ll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we’ll make sure to include as much info on each game’s current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you’ve been seeking.
Oh boy, it has been quite a week for beta news. Let’s just start with the announcement that Champions Online will be going to open beta on August 17th. Then there’s the open beta for La Tale on July 30th and CrimeCraft today. On the closed beta side, Alganon, Dawntide, Mortal Online and Dungeon Fighter Online have all entered new phases. After 3 weeks of Titan Online’s website being MIA (and being absent from EYA’s MMO list), we’ve pulled them from their spot in the open beta listing. Check out the complete list after the jump.

Massively: One Shots: Shoop of magic
While you can’t help but turn around and hit a fantasy MMO these days, we do have to admit, we’re fond of Runes of Magic when it comes to great free-to-play fantasy games. Today’s glowy screenshot was sent to us by William B. who retouched it a bit before we got it. Even so, it’s a nice view of the outside of Varanas. Here’s what William had to say: I just re-downloaded Runes of Magic again to give it another shot. Upon heading to Varanas for the first time on my new toon I ended up looking towards the town at this spot. It looked and framed so nice that I had to take a screenshot. The image is slightly altered to remove certain aliased areas (as there is no anti-aliasing in the game) [which gives] the town a very bright, fantasy look.
If you’re out wandering in an MMO this weekend, we want to see screenshots of your travels! Feel free to add yourself in the action, or grab a lovely landscape. All are welcome! Just email that image along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com. We’ll post it here for everyone to enjoy and give you the credit!

I Didn’t Really Know President Aquino
I’m 27 years old, I come from a political family, and yet I don’t really know much about former President Cory Aquino. All I know was that she succeeded former President Marcos through EDSA in 1986 and that she’s been criticizing the Arroyo administration for the past few years. When I heard she passed away this morning, I was really surprised to be genuinely saddened by the news. I did some soul searching while driving along Ateneo (meeting a colleague) and then it struck me why. This post is for my generation and the next generation of Filipinos who never really knew Cory.
“I don’t have any formula for ousting a dictator or building democracy. All I can suggest is to forget about yourself and just think of your people. It’s always the people who make things happen.” - Corazon Aquino
Price of Democracy
Former President Marcos clamped down on the Philippines like an iron vice. He shut down media stations and other companies when he declared martial law. Freedom then, according to my more “experienced” friends, wasn’t free. Fear ruled the streets - and not because you were afraid you’d get mugged. You were afraid that someone from the military would pick you up and kill you. It was a really different time back then. One that we can’t even imagine happening these days.
However, there was one woman who picked up the fight when her husband died. Former President Cory Aquino made the decision to stand up, represent, and fight for the Filipino people. It is because of former President Aquino and the people who backed her up that we were able to break free from Marcos’ reign of terror. The Philippines today wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have EDSA 1 and President Aquino.
What you owe to her
We owe a lot to President Aquino. The little things that we take for granted everyday wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her sacrifice and courage. If she didn’t step in and give back the media outfits to the original owners, we wouldn’t be enjoying all the TV shows that we are watching now. Journalists would still have their hands tied by fear and we wouldn’t be able to read, hear, or watch any credible news network. The truth would become relative, told only by those on the payroll of a dictator gone mad.
How about the internet? I’m willing to bet that if the Marcos era extended to today, we would probably be like China or Iran in the sense that the government is cracking down on bloggers, writers, and other new media publishers. Websites like Youtube would be banned. Now that would totally suck right?
Back then there was also curfew. You won’t be able to go out and drink with your friends, or maybe even watch a last full show. You’d have to be home, bored to death.
Integrity and Prayer
A lot of critics say that President Aquino wasn’t able to handle the economy well when she was in charge. However you really have to take into account that she wasn’t really qualified in the first place. She’s not a hardcore economist or a genius. However she had the best chances of taking down the Marcos regime and we are all blessed by her decision to go for it.
President Aquino wasn’t your perfect leader. She didn’t know all the numbers. But she did one of the best things in the history of this country. She gave us back our freedom. I believe that it’s because of her that we’re all enjoying life so much these days. In fact, without Cory, I don’t think former Presidents Ramos, Estrada, and even Arroyo would be able to perform as they did in their terms.
The next time you go out and enjoy a night with your friends, or you’re surfing for videos on the internet, or even just watching your favorite TV program… pause a while. Remember President Aquino and just thank her for her sacrifice.
Maraming maraming maraming salamat President Aquino. May you find comfort and peace in the loving arms of our Creator.

Games Convention Online - gamigo reveals War of Angels
A new MMORPG is
mMO MONEY!: Lotro, The Resistance to A Resistance.
I was reading a blog topic at Player vs. Developer and I was remembering all the grinding I did to raise certain resistances to elemental damage. This is a norm in almost all MMO’s I have ever played; each monster or boss NPC does a certain type of damage. Most of this is direct damage but most commonly in AoE (area of effect form), that effects a wide scope of players in the fight.
In recent developments within Lord of the Rings online, the community is in an uproar about the dependence of radiance based armor. So I contacted a friend who was a die hard Lotro player and see what she had to say. She has a top level healer on the gladden server, she is currently at 4 radiance. According to her kinship it was too low to do a certain endgame boss, “The Watcher”. So recently she has left her kin and moved on from Lotro due to this radiance predicament.
Teh Balrog say, "No radiance for joo!"
When asked the relevance of radiance she stated that in order to be able to survive the watchers dread (lowers max hp and causes you to cower in fear) you need about 7 pieces of radiance gear to give you enough hope to counteract the dread.
Where are these pieces of radiance gear to be found? Through high level instances requiring a group of 6 – 12 In hard mode with other endgame geared players. This now makes grouping inevitable (not a bad thing imo) and can only be accomplished by focused kinships.
This has sparked hot debates and even a very long petition to abolish radiance based gear dependency. This is Turbine’s Inc stance on the matter: “Radiance will continue to be an important game play mechanic going forward for Raids. In other words, given the amount of time and energy gone into making the Radiance system it’s safe to assume Radiance gear will be required for future Raids.”
This takes me back to the days of the Pre-BC World of Warcraft mini-expansion Ahn ‘Qiraj 40 man instance, where you needed a minimum of 150+ nature resist to survive. We didn’t complain or write petitions, we just either A) started grinding the necessary rep to be able to get the materials to craft or buy, and B) grind AQ 20 to receive a lot of the loot dropped for nature resist. I was a pro hunter with amazing levels of leather crafting and skinning, I could skin anything and craft almost everything leather in the game. So I parked in Silithus, a contested area, and killed bugs and grinded rep until I had the requirements to advance In Ahn ‘Qiraj. This was tedious, but as a good wow addict my desire to progress prevailed
Second boss of AQ 20, those were the days…
This wasn’t the first or last time as an endgame player I was forced to grind to advance. In FFXI I played until the Chains of Promathia expansion was released as a Galka Paladin. In order to be competitive I needed certain gears that gave me the important stats that a good tank would need. Vitality, Defense and Strength were most important along with high levels of resistances to the magic that higher level mobs were using. These items were either dropped by notorious monsters that were highly camped, or fighting through dungeons and opening coffers with keys that were dropped by even harder mobs. It was a mess and took a long time to accomplish, I was just glad I had a good group of people in my Linkshell (guild) that helped. Without them it was not happening.
Thanks Chaostheory!
Software developers need a mechanic to keep player retention up even when trying to keep up with players hungry for content. Endgame content isn’t all about raiding or camping rare high level monsters. It’s about keeping players involved in the game long after they made it to the highest levels, this was made popular in the beginning by Everquest and perfected by World of Warcraft. This endgame mechanic breaks players out of the elite soloists mode, if they want the cool endgame gear; they need to find their way to an endgame guild. This is the primary focus for MMORPG’s, to promote socializing and cooperation amongst players. But also from a business side of it, they want you to continue to pay for your subscription and buy future expansions. There is always a catch.
I believe the grind is inevitable in any MMORPG you will play, being for stats, skills, resistances and experience points. Game companies need to do have players log into their virtual world and spend specific amounts of time in it. The way they keep you busy is by both the desire to achieve and explore new content, and to feel rewarded by your efforts by fellow players. Having that new piece of (insert dream item here) drop and finally being able to put one goal to rest just to create a new one. Well at least for me it does, according to Bartles test at GamerDNA I am an achiever and a socializer, that’s why I have had no problem with this type of endgame shenanigans.

I do agree with PVD, there is a high burnout rate in this type of gaming activity. Many times I would find myself alone somewhere grinding something for something I need for something, chatting on vent or in guild and exclaim, “I am bored of this.” When I am finally at the endgame phase and find myself just grinding to grind to a higher level of grind I eventually pull the plug. And many players are following suit, even WoW players are starting to get fidgety and are looking for different games. This might have sounded repetitive but it is the same aspect of being an endgame player, it’s all about doing the same thing to keep you locked and loaded into this game.
Now the Lord of the Rings Online community is starting to feel the familiar burn of the downside of endgame content. They have created “The Resistance to a Resistance”, it would be easy for me to say, “Stop crying and kill the bosses, get the drops and move forward.” It’s not always that easy, as I said earlier a certain amount of group dependency comes into play. Kinships and guilds know this and start to garner a feeling of superiority and elitism starts taking hold. Eventually my Lotro friend left her kinship and soon after stopped playing Lotro for greener pastures. “Radiance became mandatory and I couldn’t get groups to get the radiance gear, I was stuck in a viscous cycle and it stopped being fun”, she told me when I asked her why.
I’ve heard players say to me, “why did you quit after all that work.” I respond that I did work, but I also experienced a lot and I feel that I have gotten what I wanted out of the game. If it gets to a point that I am just working to replace my shiny new thing with another shinier new, new thing I know it’s time to close the book on that game and open up a new one. That’s why the words end and game are put together, isn’t it?
All good games come to an end.
Until then…

Bleach Manga 368 - Espada versus the Vizards
The latest issues for Bleach and Naruto are already uploaded on Onemanga. I’ll write about Naruto later on. For Bleach, the battle lines are drawn much clearer. Hisagi gets a scolding from Tosen after his former Captain says that Hisagi has no hint of fear in his words - which is opposite to what Tosen taught him about having fear in battle to win. The focus then shifts to Toshiro and the Vizard, Hiyori. Details after the break.
I loved the interaction between Toshiro and Hiyori. It was really funny, entertaining, and kinda stupid but at least you’ll end up laughing. Basically Hiyori bashes Toshiro with several insults, leading to her calling him shorty. Toshiro retaliates by saying that Hiyori is much smaller, which makes her temper go on overdrive mode, haha. Anyway, Lisa leaves the two and engages Espada Tres, Harribel.
Lastly we have Espada Dos, Barragan. He’s engaged by Hachi, the Kido Specialist. He quickly uses a barrier to trap Barragan but things don’t go as planned as Barragan reveals that he can also make Kido age.
It looks like it’s now the Vizards show and all the Shinigami have been sidelined. Kinda frustrating since I was really excited to see Ukitake’s and Kyoraku’s Bankais.

But that’s not all; the long-awaited racial prologues will also be included. This is the first quest in the game, an opening cutscene which leads into the starter zones of Poeta or Ishalgen. To see them you just need to create a new character of either faction. For beginners, NCsoft are also including tutorial videos, new dialogue and quest text, various fixes and two new servers in both Europe and North America. Excited yet? Well don’t forget, the fun begins on Friday at noon PST and 8PM CEST.

Massively: Global Agenda fansite competition offers up more keys for next closed beta phase
With Global Agenda’s current closed beta being all the buzz these days, getting in is no easy feat. Hi-Rez Studios is treating their testing phases as actual controlled testing — with only around 1,000 people to start and mandatory feedback from the testers. If you’re just looking for a free game to play for a few months, you might want to look elsewhere.
Going hand in hand with that, many Global Agenda fansites are being offered a very small amount of beta keys to distribute to their readers. You may remember earlier in the month when we gave away 10 keys for AgendaSource.com, and now we’re here to help another fansite give away their keys. Keep reading below for more information.
